Recently, my mom, hubby and I decided to go out for lunch. It was a chilly, rainy day. We could have gone to any chain restaurant, as we have in the past, but we were all craving something a little different. A few years back, my mom and I had gone to the Black Forest Inn. She had been several times but that was my first visit. I fell in love with the food but hadn’t had the opportunity to go back since then. My husband had never eaten there and was keen to try it based on seeing it on You Gotta Eat Here. So, I made the suggestion: how about lunch at the Black ForestInn?

I know that I don’t do restaurant reviews too often, but this one is extra special. To anyone who watches The Food Network, specifically the show You Gotta Eat Here, The Crepe House might be a little familiar, as John Catucci paid them a visit on the show in the last year.
I’m going to be completely honest up front: I have a connection to this place — my aunt is the owner of this joint (and is the one that John Catucci hung out with on the show). But I am in no way biased about this restaurant as a result. If I didn’t care for it, I just wouldn’t write about it. If you’re in the Port Dover area and are looking for a decent meal, it’s worth stopping by. Let me share with you why.
I was off sick from work today and slept most of the day away. When I awoke, I was feeling much better, but was absolutely famished. I considered calling and ordering some take-out chicken soup from Swiss Chalet until I looked up the nutritional value. For one bowl of chicken and vegetable noodle soup was over 1000mg of sodium!! No thank you!
My husband suggested that I make my own. The problem with that was that I had no chicken in the fridge! I had veggies and broth and whole wheat egg noodles (no yolk) but no chicken. Can’t have chicken soup without chicken, can we?
But by this point, I knew I wanted soup. So I went scouring around the web, looking for ideas. I knew I had about a pound of mushrooms that needed to be used up soon, so I based my searching on that ingredient. What I found was an intriguing recipe over on AllRecipes.com called Hungarian Mushroom Soup. I was surprised to find out that with the exception of the fresh parsley (I just had dried), I had all of the ingredients.
Despite buying a lot of frozen meals as of late to try, I have been making fresh food, too. I promise. I’ve been trying to reintroduce some sandwich options into my meal plan. I’ve been having some success in doing so by using the Weight Watchers and PC Blue Menu bread products. In this particular case, I had bought a package of the Weight Watchers whole wheat tortillas and decided I wanted a wrap of some sort.
I’m still trying some pre-prepared frozen meals out, in hopes of having a ‘quick and easy option’ other than take-out for those times when I don’t have time or energy to cook. It does happen, from time to time!
Recently, I’ve reviewed a couple of frozen meals, but I thought I’d switch it up a bit today and compare two products today instead of just giving you my random, meandering thoughts on what I thought of the frozen meal in question.
Today, I’m going to compare a frozen meal with the nearly identical product made from scratch, specifically made with ‘lighter’ ingredients. The frozen meal in question is Weight Watchers “Smart Ones” English Muffin Sandwich. I like these because they’re easy enough to throw in the freezer at work and to toss into the microwave on morning break (I’m one of those freaks who can’t eat immediately after getting up in the morning).
In my quest to eat better, I’ve also been looking for some pre-made meals for ease and to give me a break from cooking. As much as I enjoy cooking, I do have weeks where I don’t feel like doing a lot of cooking, after all.
I’ve tried one of the Irresistibles dinners from Metro, but I’ve also bought a couple of Weight Watchers Smart Ones meals. The first one I tried is the Broccoli & Cheddar with Roasted Potatoes.
